You believed you had a problem with self-esteem when in actuality you had difficulty with self-appreciation. The only value that you find if examining your past is discovering those things that you did do and accomplish, and decide to appreciate them.
You are so accustomed to focusing on what you think you did wrong or have not done yet, which has you keep your attention focused in a manner that causes you to feel inadequate.
You had an experience where you trusted your intuition, you made illogical choices, you ignored the voices of others, and you received a desired result that you almost missed seeing as you were looking in a different direction. You and all others do this all the time. Appreciate what you have accomplished.
